Finish SHRED Strong AF

Hey ALTR ARMY!

Per usual, we've got your back! Whether you're easing into your fitness routine or playing extra hard in the ALTR Shred (that's 15 sweaty sessions in 31 days), here are FIVE quick tips to finish the month feeling strong af:

Stretch: Arrive 5 to 15 minutes before class to loosen up and stretch out - and you can make friends while you're at it. We like to spend the last few minutes of each ALTR session cooling down and stretching as group, but you're more than welcome to hang out a little longer. If you need spread out with some resistance bands, rock around on a foam roller, or just chill in child's pose. We're here for it!

Hydrate: Take your body weight and multiply that by TWO. That's how many ounces of water you should be drinking PER day, if you're active - and especially in this humidity! Challenge yourself to drink one bottle of water during class and one bottle after. We’re big fans of hydration, because we know it’s the key to feeling your best and having your most effective workout.

Fuel: Some of our friends like to use ALTR SHRED as an excuse to do a full-fledged Whole 30 detox (no sugar, no dairy, no gluten, no alcohol, no excuses, for at least 30 days). If that's your thing, #hellsyes! If not, try giving up or starting up one food group for the remainder of the month (think: yes to daily fruit, greens or increased water intake - or - no to alcohol, dairy, fast burning carbs or sodas). You are what you eat, right?

Rest: You should be getting 7 to 9 hours, especially if you're one of our early-birds who needs to survive a full workday after a tough workout. Naps are cool, too. Your muscles recover and build while at rest. Sleep up!

Center: Where's your head at? Join us for yoga after or in place of traditional ALTR sesh, to calm your spirit, muscles and mind. No matter where you are in your journey, you're exactly where you're supposed to be.

Continue to crush! You're almost there!

How to Make Friends at the Gym

How to Make Friends at the Gym

Making friends at the gym can be intimidating af. We call ourselves the #ALTRarmy, because we’re tough, but we’re also a FAMILY. Seriously. Many of our regulars greet each other with high fives and hugs, and they consider our space to be a home away from home. We want to root for you, just as much as we want to challenge you.

So how do you find your tribe in such a busy place?

  1. Find Your Time - And Stick to It. Find a day/time that works best for you and make it part of your weekly ritual. It’s easier to make friends with a familiar face who you see putting in the work and smiling through the sweat, week after week. Click here to reserve your spot.

  2. Arrive Early - At least ten minutes. Your odds of striking up conversation is much higher before class instead of afterwards, when people tend to rush for the shower or catch their parking meter before it expires. If you haven’t yet, buddy up with the cuties at the front desk.

  3. Introduce Yourself - To the instructor and to the ones around you, with a smile, eye contact and a firm handshake. Make a conscious effort to remember their name by saying it out loud and repeating it.

  4. Cheer Them On - If you feel like clapping or cheering at any time during your workout - let it out and let’s party! (If not, that’s okay too). Remember that name? Make it a point to find them later and give them a fist bump or a high five between circuits or after the workout.

  5. Bring a Buddy - Yes, the point is to make NEW friends for you, but we want to make new friends too! And did you know their first week is free? Click here to claim your free week!

Have you made a new best friend at ALTR? Post your photo to social media and tag @altrfit with #ALTRArmy!

Hydration 2.0

It is imperative you remain hydrated at all times. The key elements of a healthy, high-performing lifestyle—regular exercise, a healthy diet, and regular sleep—will be essentially undermined if your body is not sufficiently hydrated.

History of our 'Hood

We dig our 'hood, and rep it proudly. It's old, full of history and our favorite people (our ALTR Army) frequent it often to visit us. Oh, and Prince once owned the space we get ALTR'd in everyday (yeah, we like that a lot).

Get Out There: Staycation in the City

It's February in Minneapolis - trust us, it's A-OK if you need a bit of a break.

Here's the thing - it's possible your PTO schedule or bank account don't necessarily warrant a weekend in sunny Arizona or a week on the beach in Mexico.

The good news? It might be cold, but Minneapolis is one hell of a place for a good 'ole staycation.

Self Care: Sleep

It's kind of mind blowing, really - science tells us our bodies need sleep (one of the best things on the planet!). But most of us don't get enough of it.

Hold up. Yep, this is crazy.

Here's the thing - sleep is good for you. Especially for those of you who are consistently crushing HIIT workouts, sleep is the secret ingredient to taking your fitness and your health to the next level.

ALTR Sweat Sesh: HIIT the Road

There's nothing like getting your sweat in in our ALTR studio (preach). But we all need a vaca now and again (especially when the thermometer is in the negative digits).

When you HIIT the road, don't forget to get ALTR'd wherever you go (the more you sweat, the more margaritas you can have, right?)

The ALTR Experience: Feel the Beat

There are a few things that set ALTR apart from the other gyms - our ALTR Army (pat yourselves on the back), our badass North Loop neighborhood, our commitment to caffeine and kombucha, the mood-inducing light show, our ass kicking workout and our raw, gritty vibe (just to name a few).

But the big one that really takes the cake? The music. Hands down.

Self Care: Foam Rolling

It's time to get real, ALTR Army - we need to talk rest days. Don't underestimate the importance of rest days. We know you love shredding it at our ALTR studio, pushing your personal limits and crushing your goals (plus, sweating with the whole ALTR Army crew isn't bad either). We feel you. We get it.

But to get the full benefit of your ALTR sessions, you need time to rest and recover. You put in the sweat and hard work, and you deserve to let the magic of HIIT do its work.

Self Care: Cupping

At ALTR, we're all about balance - Russian twists followed by tacos and tequila, burpees followed by brunch etc. The same goes for self care. When you're working it and pushing your hardest, especially during ALTR SHRED, self care couldn't be more important.

One way to practice self care? Cupping. Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine using cups to create suction over areas of pain and tension on your body. The best part? We've got a cupping expert on hand (shoutout to Dr. Matt).

New Year: Goal Setting

It's our favorite time of year - we've indulged over the holidays (it’s all about balance, right?), had a few days of rest and relaxation and are feeling refreshed and ready for a brand new year. 2018 is knocking on our door, and we're more than ready.

The best way to stay on task and live with clarity and purpose in the new year?  Goal setting. There's nothing better than starting a new year with a fresh set of goals to keep you motivated and on track.
